Sellafield’s £2.8bn funding for the next financial year is deemed insufficient, causing plans for budget cuts. This raises concerns over safety and job security at the nuclear site, which houses the world’s largest store of plutonium. Despite prioritizing safety and security, some projects may be slowed down, paused, or stopped, impacting parts of the supply chain. The public spending watchdog predicts the total cleanup cost to rise to £136bn. The GMB union calls for transparency and worker protection. Additionally, Sellafield has recently been taken out of special measures for physical security, although concerns about cybersecurity remain.
